Want an armchair adventure around the world?

Here it is: Richard Halliburton's The Royal Road to Romance. This is one of the 3 books (along with the Bible and How Green was My Valley) that my dad had access to while he was a prisoner of war in a Nazi camp for five months at age 19. Dad always just said it was a travel book but I was curious. So we found it on Amazon and it turned out to be a fresh, charming, and delightful volume -- in fact it is recommended reading in a 2003 booklist I came across! I gave copies of this 1925 classic to my siblings for Christmas. Some of my kids expressed an interest so I gave them copies, too. (Emily and Matt, yours are coming.) My kids will want to use the giant atlas we gave you for Christmas to help you navigate this hilarious, rollicking adventure! Among many other things, you'll skinny-dip at the Taj Mahal (above), sleep on top of a pyramid, and climb Mt. Fuji. You'll also see how this book influenced Grandpa's lifelong love for travel and adventure which he shared with his children. Bon Voyage!

I think I am going to have to read this one. It sounds like the adventure novels I used to read as a boy. But this one actually happened. You know, being raised on the road, what with traveling all over the country every summer for years, I must have gotten hooked on travel. I learned to read maps, calculate miles per gallon, miles per hour, etc. We stopped at every historical marker to listen to Daddy read them. Travel trivia. Got hooked, I tell ya. Never stopped picking up little bits and pieces. Love to see new places, and old ones, too. So, I better read the book. . .
